Cold spell

It seems the cold spell is finally over, but it was very cold for over a week. 10 degrees feels so warm now! The beginning of the cold was MLK weekend, and the lift crew did a great job dealing with large crowds while adjusting to the nasty temps. In the 10 years I've been here, I'd have to say that was in the top 3 coldest weeks.

Alyeska Resort - The Epic Winter

We're not seeing too many "Closed" signs these days.

The great weather has allowed Snow safety to have the mountain open from New Year's chute to Max's face.

Beautiful, cold sunrise.

Conditions on the mountain are about as good as it gets, with late season coverage.

Former lift crew members Sarah and Ryno were in town for a few days last week.

Lift and Grooming crews work closely to clear snow away from the lift stations. Let's just say there's been a lot of snow removal work this season.

Torchlight parade was last night, and was great fun, as usual!

Night skiing has begun, and the guests are stoked to ride lift 1.

Riding the lift with Jesse Jo, Jeff F. and Jen on 40" Tuesday last week.

Karl got some riding in on 40" Tuesday. I've know KWAK since I started working at Alyeska; he showed me the ropes.

Cruised the groomers with Jon and Jeff- we went fast.

Out riding with Sarah, who trained me at the tram back on 2001. We always have so much fun!

It's great to be open for skiing and riding again. The conditions and stoke have been great!

Passholder day is this Tuesday from 11-3, and the forecast is for snow! Opening day is Wednesday, and we're really to go!

The new upper bull wheel for lift 6 is here! It arrived this morning, and has already made its way to the top.

Meet some of the Summer Crew members

Tony has worked in various departments (tram, events, lift ops) for almost a year now.

Cheyenne has worked lift ops for about 5 years now; and has worked at the tram, Spa at Alyeska, and Tramway cafe as well. She gives an awesome pedi!

Austin is the winter night lift ops supervisor, and enjoys camping in the freezing cold on mountain tops.

Ali has rocked lift ops with her great attitude and giggles for almost a year now.

Foz has been on lift ops for 3 years, and enjoys "living the dream,"

Jeff G. has been on lift maintenance for about 15 years and can tell you more than you'd ever want to know about most lifts, but especially lift 6.

Last day of the First Season of DH Biking at Alyeska Resort

Jody (MLC and Grounds) and Vesna (Mountain Host) enjoy some of the last bike turns of the season.

After breakdown tomorrow, mountain crews will be taking a 4-5 week break to travel and rest. We'll be back at it mid-November for training. First day of the winter season lift ops for public will be November 23. New this year: a special half day opening for season pass holders the day BEFORE Alyeska opens to public!

Since 1994. I have been a lift operator, snowmaker, trail crew, ski patrol, night ski patrol supervisor, mountain host supervisor, mountain services manager. I have also helped out at the rental shop, ticket offices, mountain events when needed and drove the shuttle bus.

Have you worked at other resorts; what did you do there?
Crested Butte mountain resort in the late 80's during college at Western State, where I was a children's ski school instructor and a cashier at the upper mountain restuarant.

What brought you to Girdwood/ Alyeska?
I was raised in Anchorage and grew up skiing at Alyeska. After college I decided to move to Girdwood to be a ski bum for a season and never left.

What is your favorite thing about Girdwood/ Alyeska?
Powder, of course. As well as all the really great people that live in this community.

Do you ski or snowboard? What other recreational activites do you enjoy in the local area?
I am a former snowboarder and telemark skier too, but I prefer to ski. I also like to whitewater kayak and raft, fly fish, camp, DH bike at Alyeska, hike and run. And hang with my family.

Any other resorts you'd like to give a shout out to?
I really enjoyed Mammoth Mountain when I went there, but of course they were in a crazy storm cycle with lots of powder. Super fun and the people there were really friendly.

What piece of advice would you give to our guests?
Winter: Don't be discouraged if it's raining at the base- it means it dumping up top and epic & bring your fat skis.
Summer: Be responsible with your trash so the bears don't have to be shot. Give all wildlife plenty of space.

Why Girdwood/ Alyeska: Spent the summer of 2001 in Moose Pass and heard about Alyeska and all the snow here. Came up for a Ween concert and met some fun folks in this beautiful town. The quality of in Girdwood is through the roof. One ride up the tram and it was on, I knew I wanted to live here!

Ski or snowboard/ other recreational activities: Alpine ski, although I'd like to try tele-skiing and snowboarding. I also enjoy dogwalking, yoga and rolling down the Gird to Bird path on my bike or rollerblades.

Any advice for the guests? Summer guests: get a travel guide and read some of it before you come up; it will make your trip SO much more enjoyable. Winter guests: have fun, but play by the rules; they are there for your (and others') safety.

There's some good news and some bad news. Bad news: chair 6 won't be running until next weeknd (at the soonest). Good news: lift tickets are only $20 for chairs 3 & 4 only!
Get stoked and come check it out! The trail crew is hard at work, fine tuning the existing trails and toiling away at new trails.

It has been the perfect summer to start the new DH biking program. Come by and give it a try.

Some mountainside employees enjoy the last evening of night skiing, last Saturday.

There were quite a few lift mechanics and lift crew at chair 6 Saturday at closing. What a stellar crew!
Scott manned mid-1 for the last night of night skiing.
And then it was done. At the end of the last night of night skiing, the employees had a small torchlight parade. It's hard to believe the season is coming to a close. I'm still hoping for a ton more snow in the last 4 weeks!
Also, thanks to the awesome grooming crew who made made a quick pass (4 cats, up and down) so the parade route would be smooth and safe!

The groomers were skiing wonderfully today! Gail's gully was so smooth and wide.

There were quite a few mountain employees checking out the conditions this morning. I don't think anyone was disapointed.

The north face from Ragdoll gate down was open for a few hours today.
So much snow fell in the early part of the day (8" between 6am and 10:15am, and it continued a few more hours), that the chairs on lift 4 had to be flipped up and back down again to clear the snow off them midday.
Yay for freshies!

Lift 1 for Day Ops!

After a power outage kept the mountain closed yesterday, we are ready to be back spinning lifts!
Today, lift 1 will be running instead of lift 4, so lift maintenance can work on a maintenance bulletin.
Also, there is a blizzard warning for the local area from 10am-4pm, with winds already hitting 50mph on the ridgetops. We could definitely use the fresh snow!

The lift 1 electric motor came home today.

Hoisted into place by lift maintenance. Now to be re-connected and tested, and hopefully ready by Friday night skiing.
I made it out to the Knuckles with Jen D. and Di today. It was an adventure!
Kelly (former lift and tram op) is enjoying life on patrol this winter.

800 posts on this blog represents quite a bit of time that I have put in taking and posting pictures. Thanks to those that have come along for the journey, peaking into the world of lift operations. Really, the best part of working with this crew is all the great folks we get to work with. The pre-public turns aren't bad, though!

Patrol did some routes on the upper north face today. They haven't open it yet, though.

Do you think the snow on the mountaintops is here to stay? I love this time of the year; I guess the anticipation of future winter fun is in itself enjoyable.

Grounds crew was hard at work on Saturday, clearing out a spot next to the tram base for summer stage set-up.

Opening the mountain to tram accessed downhill biking has been quite a big deal! Check out this video and article from the Anchorage Daily News. I have to add, for the record, that Karl's last name is Mittlestadt. The video is 8 minutes long, but it is worth it. You might be surprised where the trail goes at about minute 5.
